Verfremdungsklezmer = Punk Cabaret + Radical Yiddish Song + Gothic American
Folk + Klezmer Danse Macabre
The Circle Coffeehouse is delighted to welcome all the way from Berlin,
Daniel Kahn and the Painted Bird, with Michael Winograd. Fronted by
Jewish-Detroiter singer-songwriter Daniel Kahn on vocals, accordion, piano
and guitar with Michael Winograd on clarinet, US expat composer Michael
Tuttle on upright bass and a rotating roster of some of Berlin and New
York's best young Klezmer and Balkan players, the band was formed in Berlin
in the fall of 2005. "This music has more life in it (and is more radical)
than all the super-hip indie bands combined," says a reviewer from Songs
Illinois. Like the Jerzy Kozinski novel from which they take their name,
The Painted Bird reminds us that even if man is only an animal, he can still
sing. Join us to learn first hand about the klezmer scene in Berlin!
For more information on Daniel Kahn and the Painted Bird you can check them
out at www.myspace.com/thepaintedbird or http://paintedbird.net/.
With a focus on Yiddish culture and folk music with a social conscience, the
Circle Coffeehouse features local artists and well-known national performers
in an intimate setting. The Workmen's Circle is a secular, progressive,
Jewish community and cultural center that combines Jewish culture with a
commitment to social and economic justice.
Tickets for members are $12 in advance, $15 at the door and for non-members
