ROY BOURGEOIS, one of the founders of School of the Americas Watch, will
speak at Harvard on Tuesday night. The event is free and open to the
public.
Father Roy will speak about his work and goals at SOA Watch and about his
recent trips to Latin America where he and other organizers have met with
grassroots social justice organizations and government officials. Since
2004, three countries have announced that they will stop sending troops to
train at the notorious School of the Americas, now called the Western
Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation or WHINSEC.
WHEN: Tuesday, April 10 at 7:45 PM
WHERE: Harvard University, Emerson 210*
Graduates of the SOA/WHINSEC are responsible for some of the worst human
rights abuses in Latin America. In 1996 the Pentagon was forced to release
training manuals used at the school that advocated torture, extortion and
execution. Last November over 20,000 people gathered at the gates of Fort
Benning, home of the SOA/WHINSEC, to demand the school's immediate
closure. This year Congress wil vote on cutting funding to the school.
