The Militant Labor Forum presents: Glory
Award winning film about the US Civil War followed by discussion
Released in 1989, Glory centers on an important chapter in the U.S. Civil War the introduction of regiments composed of African-American soldiers to combat on the battlefield against the Confederacy.
On January 6, 1863 -- just five days after President Abraham Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation the U.S. Secretary of War authorized the Governor of Massachusetts to raise two combat regiments of African-American soldiers.
These were the 54th and 55th Negro regiments the first regularly authorized Regiments of African-American soldiers of the war.
Following Massachusetts similar regiments were raised in other states, placing onto the battlefield soldiers motivated not only by a deep desire to preserve the Union, but also by a deep hatred of the system of chattel slavery, under which many had suffered before escaping to the North.
Come view this inspiring film and discuss how the deeds depicted in it helped shape the outcome of the Second American Revolution.
