The Militant Labor Forum presents: A Film Showing: Harlan County USA HARLAN COUNTY, USA documents a strike at the Brookside mine in Harlan County, Kentucky. In 1971 the accident rate at Brookside was three times the national average. There was no safety committee at Brookside. Until the strike began, the miners belonged to a company union. Wages ranged from $17 to $32 a day, as compared to $45 per day for miners represented by the United Mine Workers of America. Medical and retirement benefits were minimal and unreliable.
In June 1973, the miners at Brookside voted to strike for representation by the United Mine Workers. During that 13-month strike they stood up to company thugs, cops and courts.
The showing of this Academy Award-winning documentary will be followed by discussion on the film and the fight for safety and the union today in the coal mines.
