Luis Antonio, who has been a leader of MST for 20 years, will discuss with
us the current situation of this incredibly inspiring social movement. For
23 years, the MST, Latin America's largest social movement, has been
building a vibrant rural society as families occupy and settle on previously
unproductive land. The MST's success lies in its ability to organize and
educate. Members have not only managed to secure land, therefore food
security for their families, but also continue to develop a sustainable
socio-economic model that offers a concrete alternative to today's
globalization that puts profits before people. Now, with an
estimated 2 million members, the MST is facing new challenges in the
struggle to protect rural food sovereignty as Brazil becomes the epicenter
of the bio-fuels boom.

Grassroots International works to create a just and sustainable world by
building alliances with progressive movements. We provide grants to our
Global South partners and join them in advocating for social change. Our
primary focus is on land, water and food as human rights and nourishing the
political struggle necessary to achieve these rights.
