A Film on Women and the Cuban Revolution

(With Our Memory on the Future)
 
This documentary
produced by the noted Cuban filmmaker Octavio Cortázar in 2005 on the occasion
of the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC)
charts the profound changes in the status of women as a result of the Cuban
revolution. At an FMC Congress in 1966 Fidel Castro described the beginning of
these changes as the "revolution within the revolution." This FMC
documentary gives the viewer a picture of Cuba today, with women working in a
variety of jobs that were almost exclusively male prior to the 1959 revolution.
Through the lively interviews, women and men of many generations describe how
the revolution, with hundreds of thousands of women working outside the home
everyday,has impacted relations in the workplace, sexual
relations, divorce, and women and men's role in the household. You get a frank
picture of how deeply entrenched traditional views are on these questions, and
of the role of the FMC in this on-going battle of ideas.

documental producido por el conocido director cubano de películas Octavio
Cortazar en 2005 en la ocasión del 45 aniversario de la fundación de la
Federación de Mujeres Cubanas describe los cambios profundos en el estado de la
mujer como el resultado de la revolución cubana. En el Congreso de la FMC en
1966 Fidel Castro habló sobre el principio de estos cambios como la “revolución
dentro de la revolución.” Este documental de la FMC muestra la realidad de Cuba
hoy día, con las mujeres trabajando todo tipo de trabajos que eran casi
exclusivamente para hombres antes de la revolución de 1959. A través de
entrevistas muy animadas, mujeres y hombres de diferentes generaciones hablan
como la revolución, con cientos de miles de mujeres trabajando fuera de los
hogaresdiariamente, ha impactado relaciones en el trabajo,
relaciones sexuales, el divorcio, y el papel de la mujer y el hombre en la
casa. Ud. se da cuenta como ideas tradicionales aún siguen siendo un reto en
esta polémica y el papel de la FMC en esta contínua batalla de las ideas.
