   Salim Tamari is the Director of the Institute of Jerusalem Studies and a Sociology Professor at Birzeit    
 University. He is currently a visiting fellow at MIT. His groundbreaking book on modern Palestinian culture  
 goes beyond the usual focal point of the 1948 war to address the earlier, formative years of 1918-1948.
