*Twenty-five Thousand Tents, Maybe More: *(65 min)***
*
This film documents the lives of thousands of Palestinians - first
refugees in Iraq -- and now stranded in detention camps in remote desert
areas between Iraq and Syria. They're living in tents that offer little
shelter against blinding sandstorms and the biting cold of winter nights.
Syrian authorities have barred the Palestinians from leaving the Tanaf
refugee camp; journalists aren't allowed to visit.
Denied Palestinian citizenship and their lawful right to return to their
former homes in Palestine - by Israel, in flagrant violation of
international law -- they are stuck in this no-man-s-land, in miserable
conditions; a people without a country, disposed of their land and homes
for over 60 years.
One refugee likens their situation to "/Waiting for Godot/" ... or for
divine intervention. But these Palestinians refuse to accept that they
won't one day return home.
UN officials describe deteriorating health conditions, with an increase
in illnesses related to contaminated water and skin afflictions caused
by unhygienic conditions. The refugees survive solely through handouts
from the UN and Arab humanitarian groups. "/We die a thousand times a
day,/" said Wafaa Mazhar, 37, a mother of five.
*NOTE: This month we have a special guest! *

*will talk to us after the film. Thaer, 39, is a Palestinian artist and
human rights activist who was born and grew up in Baghdad.
Thaer's story is one of incredible courage. In 2005, with violence
escalating in Iraq against Palestinian refugees, he begins plans to lead
an exodus of threatened Palestinian families to Syria, to ask for
refuge. Come and hear Thaer talk about his *astounding odyssey*. A
translator will be on hand.
