State House Hearing Alert
Expiring Use Legislation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Attention Tenants and Supporters!
Urgent Notice - Mark Your Calendars - Tuesday, May 5, 2009
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

JOIN US AT THE STATE HOUSE
On Tuesday, May 5, 2009 the Joint Committee on Housing will hold a hearing on the
Expiring Use Bills before them - including the Home Rule Petitions and the Statewide
Enabling Act to Preserve Affordable Housing - endorsed by MAHT and its membership
- which will limit rent increases and preserve 1000's of apartments at NO COST TO
THE STATE and thereby protect low income tenants from predatory rip-off artists
like First Realty and Beacon Properties.
(Other legislation before the committee includes the Tucker/Honan Bill, which was
crafted by an owner-dominated task force and would only affect buildings offered
 for sale, not where owners are NOT selling such as Georgetowne, Tammybrook or Jonathan
Realty. In fact, there is currently NO BUILDING in the state where the Tucker/Honan
bill would apply. Even if a building WERE offered for sale, the state and cities
DO NOT HAVE THE FUNDS to pay out $160,000 per apartment to purchase these buildings
- this would mean pay out of $150+ million for Georgetowne alone, if it WERE for
 sale. Only the Enabling Act or Home Rule Petitions will enable cities to save these
buildings AT NO COST by limiting these owner windfall profits.)

For detailed information about the Statewide Enabling Act to Preserve Afflordable
Housing and the Home Rule Petitions filed by Massachusetts cities and towns, go

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The world has changed since last year!  We can no longer afford to continue give-aways
of public money to landlords who manipulate the legislative process for their own
financial gain.
We can no longer stand by while our political leadership continues to allow obscenely
wealthy landlords to convert to market rate at the expense of low income tenants.
We must stand together to:
SAVE OUR HOMES!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Remember  to RSVP.
Call the MAHT office at 617.267.2949 if:

See You On May 5th!
