On July 12 of 2006, Israel launched a massive attack against Lebanon
after two Israeli soldiers were captured by Hezbollah resistance
fighters who demanded the release of Lebanese detainees from Israeli
prisons.

Filmed during the attack, 33 Days tells the untold stories that forever
marked the lives of those who survived that fateful summer in Beirut. It
chronicles the efforts of 4 professionals as they try to provide
emergency aid, report current news of the conflict and help Lebanese
children process the violence and destruction they see around them on a
daily basis: theatre director Sharif Abdunnur, graphic designer Sharif
Bibi, journalist Fadia Baszzi and Mariam Al-Bassam, director of the news
desk at New TV.

"Hezbollah's strength derives primarily from popular support within the
Shiite Muslim minority in Lebanon which has suffered from heightened
poverty and displacement as a result of the US-backed Israeli occupation
of southern Lebanon between 1978 and 2000, the US-backed Israeli
bombardment of the Shiite-populated areas of the country from the 1970s
through the 1990s, and the US-backed neoliberal economic policies of the
Lebanese government that have decimated the traditional economy."
~ Stephen Zunes, for Foreign Policy in Focus, July 26, '06

"/A lot of people think this [assault] was just a small skirmish, but a
million people were displaced from their homes, all victims of
circumstances/," recalls director Mai Masri. "/As one woman says in the
documentary/, '/We want dignity, not canned food./' /What was also
important was that the assault unified the Lebanese ... Political
divides were forgotten and when Hezbollah scored some victories, it was
celebrated as a Lebanese victory against those who attacked our//
civilians/."
