The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has been in the forefront of the
struggle for student rights ever since we successfully argued before the
Supreme Court that students should not be compelled to recite the Pledge of
Allegiance in schools. That was way back in 1943.

Forty years ago we had another landmark victory, when the Supreme Court
upheld the right of Mary Beth Tinker to protest the Vietnam War by wearing a
black armband to school.

How significant was this victory? Where are student rights headed today?
Join the discussion with Mary Beth Tinker on September 17 at an event
sponsored by the ACLU of Massachusetts and the Civic Education Project:

"Student Rights in the 21st Century: A Constitution Day Forum with Mary Beth
Tinker" will also feature:

- Winston Cox, principal of Social Justice Academy;

- Boston College Law School professor Mary-Rose Papandrea, an expert on
student speech rights in the digital age;

- attorney Jeff Pyle, formerly a high school plaintiff in an ACLU case that
gave Massachusetts students the broadest free speech rights in the country;

- students who are standing up today in their schools.
