The 2009 Sacco & Vanzetti Social Justice Award
Honoring MEL & JOYCE KING

Saturday, November 28nd, 2009

Many know the travesty of justice that the Sacco & Vanzetti case represents,
of two Italian immigrants and anarchists who were unjustly targeted,
convicted and sentenced to death. Community Church strives to keep this
memory alive by reminding ourselves that the injustices of the 1920's and
indeed throughout history, continue to this day.  We are proud to be among
the many groups working to create a more just, humane and community-centered
world, and are proud to honor Mel & Joyce King on this day.

Mel King is a poet, community organizer and life-long activist. He was
instrumental in founding the Rainbow Coalition; has sat on national and
international committees including the U.S. Peace Council; was a
Massachusetts legislator for sixteen years where he supported Divestment
from South Africa; and headed MIT's Urban Studies Program. He founded the
South End Technology Center where he can often be found today.

Joyce King has been a life-long activist and organizer for racial and gender
equality. She has a Masters Degree in Education from Harvard and taught at
St. Joseph's Community School. She has sat on the Boards of the YWCA,
Roxbury Community College and Renewal House (a domestic violence shelter of
the UU Urban Ministry). For years Joyce and Mel King have welcomed people
into their home for Sunday brunch, creating community for hundreds of people
who come together to break bread, share stories, and find solutions to
social and community issues together.

Other Guests include.

Kip Tiernan, Founder/co-founder of Rosie's Place, the Boston Food Bank, the
Boston Women's Fund, and Healthcare for the Homeless. Sarah-Ann Shaw, Boston
's first African-American television reporter and long-time community
activist. Tilly Ruth Texiera, long-time activist who supported Mel King for
the Boston School Committee. Music by Josh Rosen, jazz pianist and Berklee
professor and The Foundation Movement, making hiphop for social change.

A delicious buffet will be served following the program.

DIRECTIONS/PARKING

The Community Church is located at 565 Boylston Street in Copley Square,
between Dartmouth and Clarendon Streets.

Parking is available on Sunday mornings at the Back Bay Garage (entrances on
Clarendon Street or St. James Ave.). We can provide a sticker to affix to
your parking receipt, and you will be charged $5.00 for 3 hours of parking.

By public transportation, take the Green line to Copley or take the Orange
line to Back Bay station. Community Church is a 2-minute walk from either
station.
