About /Sida: Confesiones a un médico

How was the first AIDS case diagnosed in Cuba? How many seropositive
women have decided to give birth? Can you become infected with HIV
during your first sexual experience? Are there patients with HIV older
than 60? Is there a cure for AIDS? What has been the strategy of Cuban
authorities to reduce its incidence in Cuba?

Dr. Jorge Perez Avila, who has dedicated himself to fighting the
epidemic in Cuba during more than twenty years and who was the first
director of the first sanatorium for HIV positive patients, narrates the
stories and conflicts of the people: those who are HIV positive,
government officials, professionals, health workers, families, and AIDS
patients, to attest in an exemplary manner to the true face of the
largest pandemic that has confronted humanity and Cuba since the 20th
century.

/Sida: Confesiones a un //médico/ [/AIDS: Confessions to a Doctor/]
(Ediciones Abril, 2008) does not leave the reader indifferent. Seeking
to go beyond the numbers, the book journeys into the human and social
conflict provoked by each case including those of orphans and their sick
parents, of the families and the health professionals that confront
these cases and the never-ending struggle of the Cuban government so
those who live with the disease can live with respect, dignity,
equality, and rights.
