Come to local screenings of the documentary "At Home in Utopia":

About the Film

At Home in Utopia focuses on the United Workers Cooperative Colony, aka the
Coops, a grassroots and member-driven community of 2,000 immigrant Jewish
factory workers, built in the Bronx in the 1920s. The film bears witness to a
struggle for equity and justice spanning two generations, with residents
transcending barriers of race, language, and sometimes even common sense.
Tracking the rise and fall of the Coops, At Home in Utopia pays close attention
to the passions that bound them together and those that tore them apart. History
may not repeat itself, but given the current economic crisis and the recent
presidential election, the story of the Coops has powerful echoes today. Length:
56 min.

About the Director

Award-winning filmmaker Michal Goldman's documentaries look at how people define
and express the urgent issues of their times through the way they live their
lives. She produces, writes, and edits her films, which include A Jumpin' Night
in the Garden of Eden, the first film to document the revival of klezmer music;
Umm Kulthum, A Voice Like Egypt, about the diva of Arabic song and her country;

school. Goldman is founder and president emerita of Filmmakers Collaborative, a
Boston-based non-profit that supports independent filmmakers nationwide.
