A Public Forum
Already engaged in two unpopular wars — Iraq and Afghanistan — the U.S. has
now entered into a third in Libya. The stated purpose? Stop a massacre and
support the democratic aspirations of the Libyan people.
We don't have to go far back in history to know that U.S. intervention will
only increase the number of dead. Take the often-cited example of the
U.S.-led "humanitarian" *intervention in the Balkans*, in which NATO bombs
escalated inter-ethnic violence on both sides. Or take *Iraq*, in fact,
where the argument for intervention (the U.S. had a duty to be the world's
cop and oust Saddam Hussein) was very similar.
And the present offers everything we need to know about U.S. motives, which
do not include democracy in the Arab world and North Africa. The U.S. has
done nothing to stop the crushing of protests in Bahrain and Yemen because
the Bahraini and Yemeni dictatorships are close U.S. allies, armed and
funded by the U.S. And, far from liberating Afghans, the brutality with
which the U.S. *dehumanizes the people it occupies* is now on full display
as photos of the "kill team" are published around the world.
Join us for a discussion of the events in Libya and hear the case against
U.S. intervention.
