On
September 1, temporary workers and supporters will ride across Boston to bring
visibility to the oppressive labor conditions many low-wage workers experience
every day.
Just as “Freedom Riders” united to
challenge Jim Crow laws fifty years ago, we are asking you to join hundreds of
others in this symbolic fight for better working conditions.
Gather in East Boston — an area known for hiring temp workers on street corners
— to perform and watch skits, hold a brief demonstration, and then board a bus
and additional vehicles to caravan to South Boston.
Join a press conference and rally at South Boston’s
Iron Workers Local 7 Union Hall. There,
elected officials, community leaders, and temp workers will publicly demand
better workplace protections and advocate for the passage of Reform
the Employment Agency Law (REAL) (HB 1393),
legislation that would improve conditions for temp workers.
The event will culminate with a delegation of temporary workers and community
leaders marching to the nearby disreputable temp agency (business name to be
released September 1) calling upon management to reform its practices or face
future protests.
When:
September 1, 10AM – 12PM
Where:
10AM – Central Square Park/Liberty Plaza, 264 Border Street,
East Boston
(near Maverick T Station).
11AM – Iron Workers Hall, 195 Old Colony Road, South Boston.
