UJP: Some Lessons of September 11, 2001
SOME LESSONS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001
============================================================

Dear Friend of United for Peace with Justice,
In remembrance of the enormous tragedies and deaths of September 11, 2011,
United For Peace and Justice extends its sincere condolences to all who lost
loved ones on that awful day. No one can truly know the pain of the loss or the
emotions of those who escaped death without having faced the experiences. UFPJ
also marks this somber occasion by remembering countless tragedies in the wake
of the U.S. military response. We remember the horrific experiences of those
tortured, the families both civilian and military who will never see their
loved ones again and the millions displaced from their homes, some fleeing to
other countries.

As a network whose members include September 11 and military families, U.S.
veterans of the Iraq and Afghans wars and organizations who have worked
alongside Iraqis and Afghans, we hope that ten years later in 2011 some of the
lessons our nation has learned are that hate and war bring only more tragedy
and death. In a world connected by economies, transportation and communications
- facing the challenges of climate change, energy depletion and nuclear
proliferation - war is a foolish waste of resources.  War hastens human-made
disasters and severely hampers our ability to address natural ones. It is a
waste of resources sorely needed to support people and grow economies. It is
time for the U.S. to end its wars around the world.  The U.S. must work toward
equitable global economies with human needs and self-determination at it
center.  The U.S. must support a path of peace and justice as the means to
address geopolitical conflicts.  The U.S. must immediately withdraw all its
troops, contractors and bases from Iraq and Afghanistan and stop making war in
Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and Libya.
On the 10th year anniversary of this terrible event we ask our nation to
reflect on the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Nonviolence is the
answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time: the need for
man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and
violence. Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects
revenge, aggression and retaliation.”
Let our nation bring meaning to the tragedy of September 11, 2001 by using its
horrors as a catalyst to walk the path Dr. King has challenged us to tread.
Sincerly
Michael McPhearson
National Coordinator, United for Peace & Justice
