LAILA MURAD
"The Struggle to Free Tarek Mehanna"
For several years Tarek has been victim to FBI surveillance and harassment.
He was targeted for being a politically conscious, outspoken Muslim leader.
In an attempt to silence and use him, the FBI approached Tarek to become an
informant. When Tarek, a man of integrity, refused to be an FBI informant
against his community, the FBI continued to pursue him with threats of
criminal charges if he would not comply, before finally arresting him in the
fall of 2008 and then again on October 21st, 2009.
He has since been detained in pre-trial solitary confinement at Plymouth
County Correction Facility in 23-hour isolation and denied bail twice. He
now awaits trial, facing charges of "false statements", "conspiracy" and
"material support for terrorism" and a life sentence if wrongfully
convicted. The trial has been set to begin October 24th, 2011.
