Dear All,

Marvin Byrd has worked at Harvard's Science Center mail room since 1995,
for many years as a "casual" worker without benefits, later in a union job.
He uses braces and orthopedic shoes, and is perfectly capable of doing his
job, sorting and processing mail for first-year students. Despite efforts
to get promoted, Marvin remains in the union's lowest salary grade, and
lived until recently on a part-time income, based on 29 regularly-scheduled
hours. This year, management cut Marvin's hours of work from 29 to 25
hours, and started forcing him to come in six days a week, while knowing he
has a grueling commute between Cambridge and Lynn on public transportation.
At 61, Marvin is the oldest and the only African American worker in his
unit. No one else has worked in the Science Center mail room longer, no one
else in the unit uses braces to walk, and no one else has faced any cut in
scheduled hours, or is compelled to work six days per week. HUCTW members
believe Harvard is trying to push Marvin out of his job. Don't let this
happen! Please join union members, students and concerned others in a
