President
Barack Obama has called for “unprecedented pressure” to force Iran to halt its
nuclear program.  Israeli rulers have
threatened to take military action.  On
December 4 Iran announced that it shot down an unmanned US drone aircraft that
violated its airspace.
Washington and its imperialist allies have imposed
four rounds of sanctions intended to cripple Iran’s economy. They have targeted
its nuclear program with sabotage and assassinations, particularly of
scientists involved in the development of nuclear technology. 
These
attacks on Iran come as imperialists and bourgeois regimes in the Middle East
fear Iran’s influence is growing in Iraq and the region at the same time that
the US is withdrawing its forces from Iraq.
