"A milestone in American cinema.a rare achievement." - Martin Scorsese

Rogosin is probably the greatest documentary filmmaker of all time." - John
Cassavetes

One of the most significant of all American independent films, Lionel
Rogosin's 1956 docudrama chronicles three days in the heart of New York's
infamous skid row. In the nineteenth century, the Bowery was an elegant
place of large mansions and respectable theater. But when the elevated
trains came in, the Bowery became known as the place for low rents and cheap
drinks. Rogosin's film follows a down-and-out railroad worker as he
navigates the saloons and flophouses of "the saddest and maddest street in
the world" and meets several Bowery regulars. From the beginning, Rogosin's
style as a filmmaker was straightforward and compassionate. His films, made
"from the inside," showed the subjects he chose in their normal surroundings
and allowed them to speak in their own words. By focusing on ordinary people
caught up in universal problems-homelessness, racial discrimination, war and
peace, labor relations, and poverty-Rogosin made his point poignantly.
Nominated for an Oscar and selected for the Library of Congress' National
Film Registry, ON THE BOWERY is a masterpiece of the American blend of
documentary and fiction.
