EARTH HOUR 2011, SATURDAY 3/26 @ 8:30 PM
In 2007, 2.2 million people and more than 2,000 businesses turned their
lights off for one hour in Sydney, Australia to take a stand against
climate change. In 2010, a record 128 countries and territories joined
the global display of climate action.

Tomorrow, *Saturday March 26th*, at *8:30 PM* (local time), lights will
switch off again around the globe for Earth Hour, as a pledge of support
for the planet and stopping global warming.

for more information.

This Earth Hour we want you to go beyond the hour, so after the lights
go back on think about what else you can do to make a difference.
Together our actions add up.

The organizers of Earth Hour have also set up BeyondtheHour.org

for you to share your act with the world.

NUCLEAR POWER AND GLOBAL WARMING
To stop global warming, we need a profound shift in how we generate and
consume energy, moving beyond the burning of fossil fuels. One argument
for nuclear power is that it does not produce carbon dioxide, but as the
recent tragic events in Japan illustrate, nuclear energy may not
represent a sound, safe alternative.

Recently in The Guardian
<http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=1dU8uxe6c32I7BICTZDjhH8FM5Z4oFNv>,
Natalie Kopytko, a researcher in the Environmental Department at the
University of York, explains why climate change may be the reason we
don’t want to shift to nuclear power. Kopytko stresses that climate
change contributes to a greater frequency of severe weather events that
can cause more nuclear plant emergencies. Click here to read the full

For more on the issue, read the Union of Concerned Scientist's position
on Nuclear Power and Global Warming

Their conclusion: Nuclear power is not the silver bullet for solving the
global warming problem, and a major expansion of nuclear power in the
United States is not feasible in the near term.

ACTION TIP: MEATLESS MONDAYS
The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization estimates the meat
industry generates nearly one-fifth of the man-made greenhouse gas
emissions, far more than transportation. Reining in meat consumption at
least once a week can help reduce your carbon footprint and save
resources like water and fossil fuel. Why not try Meatless Mondays
