Scarred Lands & Wounded Lives
The Environmental Footprint of War

Thursday, January 5, 6:45 to 9:00 PM
Central Square Library, 45 Pearl St., Cambridge

Scarred Lands & Wounded Lives: The Environmental Footprint of War tells the story of war's often hidden and silent victims: the Earth itself and the animals, plants, and landscapes that are impacted or even destroyed by war - whether inadvertently of on purpose. In all its stages - from the production of weapons through combat to cleanup and restoration - war pollutes land, air, and water, destroys biodiversity, and drains natural resources. Yet the environmental damage done by war and preparation for war are routinely underestimated, underreported, even ignored. The environment remains war's "silent casualty".

Activities that do such damage cry out for far-reaching public scrutiny. The very sustainability of our planet is at stake. We can no longer maintain silence about the environmental impact of war on the grounds that such scrutiny is "inconvenient" or "callous" at a time when human life is so endangered. We must at least require a fuller accounting of war's costs and consequences, and demand that destructive forces used in our name leave a lighter footprint on this highly vulnerable planet. It is to this change in values and actions that this documentary film is directed.

"The extensive research and skillful presentation by sociologists Alice and Lincoln Day make the film a surprisingly moving experience. Interviews of scientists, war veterans and others are carefully interspersed with footage that makes vivid the long-term damage to the planet that has resulted from military conflicts and activities."

Filmmakers Alice and Lincoln Day first teamed up with VideoTakes, Inc. and the American University Center for Environmental Filmmaking to produce a five-minute trailer of "Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives," which was screened at the 2006 DC Environmental Film Festival. Upon completion of this trailer, the Days formed a tax-exempt non-profit entity, the Fund for Sustainable Tomorrows, for the purpose of producing the entire film.

UPCOMING FILM: Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin
Thursday February 2, 6:45-9:00 PM
In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bayard Rustin and as part of Black History Month, the film series will present Brother Outsider, a film about this too-little-known American.

Brother Outsider has introduced millions of viewers around the world to the life and work of Bayard Rustin - a visionary strategist and activist who has been called "the unknown hero" of the civil rights movement. A Quaker, a disciple of Gandhi, a mentor to Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the architect of the 1963 March on Washington, Rustin dared to live as an openly gay man during the fiercely homophobic 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

"Brother Outsider illuminates as never before Rustin's fascinating public career and his equally intriguing private life. It is a film worthy of his valuable legacy." - Clayborne Carson, Stanford University, Director, Martin Luther King Papers Project
