Cambridge Forum welcomes professor JOEL BEININ as part of thier Spring series, "How We Live Today."
Joel Beinin presents case studies of Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey inspired by social movement theory. The Middle East and North Africa have become places that almost everyone "knows" something about. Too frequently written off as culturally defined by Islam, strongly anti-Western, and uniquely susceptible to irrational political radicalism, authoritarianism, and terrorism—these regions are rarely considered as sites of social and political mobilization. However, this new volume reveals a rich array of mobilizations that neither lead inexorably toward democratization nor degenerate into violence.

Joel Beinin
Joel Beinin is the Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History and Professor of Middle East History at Stanford University. Beinin has written or edited nine books, most recently Social Movements, Mobilization, and Contestation in the Middle East and North Africa; co-edited with Frédéric Vairel and The Struggle for Worker Rights in Egypt. His articles have been published in leading scholarly journals as well as The Nation, Middle East Report, The Los Angeles Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Le Monde Diplomatique.
