The Militant Labor
Forum presents:
A Showing of the Film “American Violet”

     AmericanViolet is a recent feature-length,
fact-based drama about an innocent Texas mother caught up in a high-profile
drug raid. Arrested and unjustly accused, a young single mother of four living
in a small Texas town, goes against the wishes of her mother, and rejects the
plea-bargain that would free her from jail, but brand her as a felon for life.
     As word begins to
spread that similar incidents are occurring in poor communities all across the
country, the young woman realizes that there are more mothers out there like
her, and decides to take a stand.
     Today
97 percent of federal convictions and 94 percent of state convictions are the
result of plea-bargaining. Earlier this year the Supreme Court in a pair of
decisions deepened the denial of jury trials for working people and legitimized
plea-bargaining as the decisive factor in who goes to prison and for how long.

subtitles / En inglés, con subtítulos en español
The film will be followed by a discussion.
