David Cortright is Director of Policy Studies at the Kroc Institute for
International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame and chair of the
Board of the Fourth Freedom Forum. He is the author or editor of 17 books on
nonviolent social change, nuclear disarmament, and the use of multilateral
sanctions and incentives as tools of international peacemaking.

October 7 marks the 11th anniversary of the U.S. war in Afghanistan.
Cortright’s/ Ending Obama’s War/ (2011) offers a critical analysis of
U.S./NATO military policy in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and his August 2012
report, /Afghan Women Speak: Enhancing Security and Human Rights/ [1], shows
that responsible military withdrawal will enhance their chances of
development and dignity.

Cortright has a long history of public advocacy for disarmament and the
prevention of war. He opposed the Vietnam war as an active duty
soldier,1968-71; was the Executive Director of SANE, the Committee for a Sane
Nuclear Policy, 1978 to 1988; and was co-founder and co-chairs Win Without
War, a coalition of national organizations opposed to U.S. policies of war.
