MUSKETAQUID EARTH DAY
APRIL 28, 2012
10am – 2pm

“
For me, in showers, in sweeping showers, the Spring
Visits the valley--break away the clouds--
I bathe in the morn's soft and silvered air,
And loiter willing by yon loitering stream ...”
(excerpt from Musketaquid
by Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Musketaquid Arts and Environment, in collaboration with OARS, announces its
22nd annual Musketaquid Earth Day celebration which this year falls on
Saturday, April 28th, from 10 am-2 pm. All events, free and open to
everyone, take place in Concord, MA 01742.

The Schedule for Musketaquid Earth Day (up-to-date details can also be found
at
http://musketaquidartsenvironment.posterous.com/pages/the-schedule-for-muske
taquid-earth-day-saturd):

10 am
River Ceremony
All are welcome to join in at the Lowell Road Boat Launch located in
Concord. Developed by participants in the river ceremony workshops, the
ceremony will feature wise and foolish chickens, and sprites from water and
earth. Expect the unexpected. The Voices for the Earth Chorus will provide
song and celebration. The Earth Day Parade proceeds from this location.

11 am
Earth Day Parade
Parade from Lowell Road Bridge to Emerson Umbrella. Large puppets will be
accompanied by several musical groups such as the Musketaquid All-Star Brass
Band, Berkshire Bateria, La Piñata, Snow Crow and Branches Steel Orchestra.
Parade participants include environmental, school and community groups,
friends, families and all those passionate about celebrating this place.
Surprise side shows are planned along the parade route. All are welcome to
join in the parade, with or without a costume. (Musketaquid will have spares
for those who would like something festive to wear.) Come!

12 to 2 pm
Arts & Environment Festival
Rock out to the sounds of local area bands Snow Crow and Spacelanders
(formerly known as Ricky Spoolhands & The Gay-Z), along with the
Boston-based Brendan Hogan Band (who has just released a new album
SilverQuick). There will be information tables from several area
environmental organizations, along with glass blowing demonstrations by
Diablo Glass, food for sale by Lefty’s Silver Cart, and water bubbler
stations provided by the town’s Concord Water. Held on the Emerson Umbrella
grounds, 40 Stow Street in Concord, right after the arrival of the Earth Day
Parade.

For many years now, Musketaquid Arts and Environment, a program of Emerson
Umbrella Center for the Arts, has honored Mother Earth by devoting a special
week in the Spring to celebrating the natural beauty of the Concord area,
aptly described by Massachusetts’ first people as musketaquid, the place
where the waters flows through the grasses. During this time, Musketaquid
rallies in a big way by presenting their own Musketaquid Earth Day to pay a
special artistic tribute to Concord’s beautiful natural surroundings, long
recognized by the likes of Thoreau and Emerson.

Each year, Musketaquid chooses a theme that best speaks to its passion for
discovery within both art and nature. “Seeking the Spirit of This Place” is
the theme for this year, and Musketaquid activities that began in
mid-January in preparation for the Earth Month Art Exhibit (now up through
April 29th at the Emerson Umbrella) and Earth Week activities, are all tied
into this “seeking the spirit” process of discovering what it means to be
connected to the earth, and finding a way to express that connection in an
artistic manner, whether it be through the visual, performing, or literary
arts.

Everyone is welcome to join in Musketaquid Earth Day and Earth Week, either
as a participant or as an active observer. More information can be found at

More background information:

Founded in 1990, Musketaquid Arts & Environment, the environmental arts wing
of Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts, is a place-based program whose
mission is to provide opportunities to create and experience art and to
explore, learn about, celebrate and care for the local environment. The name
Musketaquid honors the wisdom of Concord, Massachusett's first people who
described this place according to its nature, "the place where the waters
flows through the grasses.” All ages and abilities are welcome: individuals
and families, environmental, school and community groups. Musketaquid offers
a year-round chorus and journal group, summer and winter solstice events,
quarterly potlucks, and winter and spring programs that build towards the
Musketaquid Earth Month Exhibit and Musketaquid Earth Day in April of each
year. More information can be found at <http://www.emersonumbrella.org/>
www.emersonumbrella.org.

This year’s co-presenter of Musketaquid Earth Day, OARS (Organization for
the Assabet, Sudbury, & Concord Rivers) has a mission to protect, preserve,
and enhance the natural and recreational features of the Assabet, Sudbury,
and Concord rivers, their tributaries and watersheds, and to increase public
awareness of the rivers’ values as important natural resources. Established
in 1986 as the Organization for the Assabet River by a group of concerned
citizens, OAR added the Sudbury and Concord rivers to its mission in 2011,
becoming OARS. More information can be found at

Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts enriches lives and builds a vibrant
community through the arts. They strive to inspire creativity, learning, and
personal growth through education, performing and visual arts, cultural
events, and community collaborations. Each year they engage, excite, and
educate people of all ages – from toddlers to seniors – in the arts. Their
performing arts and events draw thousands to their 400-seat theatre. The
Umbrella presents approximately 10 exhibitions per year including curated,
juried, and non-juried exhibitions and works by local, regional, and
national artists. Their popular Musketaquid arts and environment program
links discovery of art with passion for nature. And, their community of 50
artists adds tremendous vitality and inspiration.
