On Monday, May 14 at 7:00 pm, the Coolidge Corner Theatre's Science on
Screen program will present Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home with guest speaker
Dave Wiley, Research Coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Agency's (NOAA) Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.

It's the 23rd century in director Leonard Nimoy's sci-fi adventure, and a
mysterious space probe is evaporating Earth's oceans and devastating the
atmosphere. The probe emits a message delivered in the song of long-extinct
humpback whales. Unless the probe's call is answered, Earth faces certain
destruction. So Admiral Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Nimoy), and the rest
of the former Enterprise crew travel back in time to 20th-century Earth to
find humpback whales and bring them back to the future, in the hope that the
whales can persuade the probe to stop its attacks. Landing in 1986 San
Francisco, Kirk and company find a world as alien as anything they've
encountered in their travels through the galaxy. Combining breezy humor with
a strong whale conservation message, the film earned four Oscar nominations
and was a box-office smash.

Whale conservationist Dave Wiley has been investigating the marine
environment for more than 25 years and has developed and implemented
pioneering research projects to protect endangered whales in and around the
Stellwagen sanctuary. Join us as he shares new insights into the amazing
underwater lives of humpback whales as revealed by synchronous motion
acoustic recording tags (developed at the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution) and custom 3D & 4D visualizations (developed by the University
of New Hampshire's Center for Coastal and Ocean mapping).
