Boston Area Solar Energy Association Forum: More than Meets the Eye! Fraunhofer's new HQ in Boston's Seaport Innovation District
Thursday, December 10th, 2013
Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; Presentation begins at 7:30 p.m
First Parish in Cambridge Unitarian Universalist; 3 Church Street, Harvard Square
Alex Cheimets, Program Manager at Fraunhofer CSE, will explore Fraunhofer's new headquarters and the energy research that is being baked into the building. Alex's home was the first state sponsored Deep Energy Retrofit (DER), after which he helped start a firm specializing in residential DER. He is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (BS) and University of Michigan (MBA).
It may look like another elegant renovation of a 100-year-old Boston Wharf Company building, but when completed in March, the new headquarters of the Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (Fraunhofer CSE) will represent both the state of the art and a preview of the future in building energy efficiency.
This deep energy retrofit is aiming for 50% building energy savings and LEED Platinum certification, but that's just a start. Inside and out, research labs and the building itself will be working to prove out energy efficient systems, providing crucial performance data for design validation and development. With research groups in photovoltaic module technology, building energy efficiency and distributed energy systems, Fraunhofer CSE strives to accelerate market adoption of next generation energy efficient technologies.
In sync with the spirit of Boston's flourishing Innovation District, Fraunhofer CSE offers the TechBridge commercialization assistance program, supporting pre-commercial stage companies with R&D and business community support. Recently selected to receive Department of Energy funding under its SunShot Initiative, Fraunhofer CSE will become an important actor in the effort to make solar competitive with other forms of energy.
Known as the Building Technology Showcase, the new HQ will have an interactive technology exhibit space, monitoring building systems in real-time and showing their financial and energy savings. A unique institution, Fraunhofer CSE is poised to be a local factory of innovation in the evolving cleantech world. Find out more at our January Forum!
