Mabel Ivone Olmedo González, a nurse at the Bloom (national
children's) Hospital is also a member of the Executive Board of SITHBLOOM
(union of Bloom workers). Her union, has been involved in the decade
long defense of the Salvadoran public health system that saw workers
strike twice in the last 15 years to stop privatization
SITHBLOOM is, once again, on the front lines of the fight against
privatization in El
Salvador. A US-pushed Public- Private Partnership (P3) law is currently
under debate in the Legislative Assembly and, if approved, the
downsized and restructured national hospital system would, almost
certainly, be one of the first public entities auctioned off, putting
its workers at risk of firings, salary cuts and union busting while
restricting access to health care services by El Salvador's poor
majority.
She will talk about US and Salvadoran labor solidarity and
the impact of US pressure for privatization in El Salvador. Her
experience organizing
for social justice is one you don't want to miss!
