Automatic Kalashnikov (2000, 52 minutes)
Cheap, easy to handle and durable under extreme conditions, the
invention of the AK-47 assault rifle changed the course of the second
half of the twentieth century. German filmmakers Axel Engstfeld and
Herbert Habersack visit Mikhail T. Kalashnikov, the AK-47's 80-year-
old designer now living in obscurity in the Ural Mountains, and
document how his creation became the weapon of choice of warriors in
conflicts around the globe, from Taliban resistance guerrillas in
Afghanistan to street criminals in Los Angeles. Kalashnikov’s primary
aspiration was to develop a dependable weapon to defend the borders
of his country.
