SERGIO REYES
"Chile: The Other September 11th"

September 11th marks the date when General Augusto Pinochet and his
right-wing supporters in the Chilean military and government staged a brutal
coup d'etat that overthrew the democratically elected and socialist-leaning
administration of Salvador Allende in 1973. During his rule, Pinochet
ordered strict measures against dissidents, especially Marxists, and was
responsible for the murder of more than 3,000 Chileans.

Sergio Reyes spent 3 years in the prisons of Pinochet in Chile. He was 19
years old when he was imprisoned and luckily survived torture and harsh
prison conditions. He came to the U.S. as an exile in 1976 and has worked
since as an activist for social change. Expressing the struggle of peoples
for freedom through music is part of his social change activism.
