"Harvard's
White Washing Ex-President Calderón and the Killing in Mexico"

NOVEMBER 17, 2013 --
3:30pm-6pm

AT THE DEMOCRACY CENTER (ROSA PARKS
ROOM)
45 MOUNT AUBURN ST., CAMBRIDGE, MA

(3 blocks from Red Line
– Harvard T Station)

THIS EVENT IS FREE AND
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Who
is Felipe Calderón? Calderón was the president of Mexico from
2006-2012. During his presidency he unleashed his so-called “War
on Narco-Trafficking” by deploying troops to civilian areas and
militarizing the border. In the past six years, these policies have
resulted in the murder of over 70,000 people and the disappearance of
approximately 25,000 more in Mexico. Meanwhile, Calderón’s
government intimated, killed and generally silenced journalists,
activists and intellectuals who tried to bring his policies to light. Nevertheless, Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School awarded Calderón
the lucrative and prestigious Angelopoulos Global Public Leaders
Fellowship which is serving to “white wash” his policies of
violence against his own people and his complicity with US
imperialist business interests.

Beyond
the fundamental issues of human rights violations these policies in
Mexico generated increased displacement of people who come to the
U.S. escaping repression, murder and poverty, only to be further
victimized here by our immigration system.

The
event includes presentations and open conversation about:
	* Poetry in times of public suffering: the case of recent Mexico (Juan Manuel Portillo)
	* Revolutionary Mexican music (Sergio Reyes)
	* The role of the U.S. University as it supports imperialist ventures, highlighting Calderón’s government policies (Mela Jones Heestand)
	* What should our role be in light of this situation? (Public discussion)

NO MORE HARBORING CRIMINAL
POLITICIANS AT HARVARD OR ANY OTHER UNIVERSITY!
