Greetings!
It's December and holiday season is upon us, right?

This month Cambridge Forum invites you to a lively discussion about our nation's
origins with author Nathaniel Philbrick. Take time out from the annual end-of-the-year
rush to reflect on the truly meaningful aspects of life in our democracy, as we
explore the human spirit that shaped our history and still has power to shape our
future.

Or celebrate with some "banjo cheer" on YouTube. Stephen Wade's November presentation
and Tony Trischka's performance last February will warm your hearts and lift your
spirits!

Bunker Hill & the Crisis of Leadership in Revolutionary America

December 11 @ 7pm

Nathaniel Philbrick, author of Bunker Hill: A City, A Siege, A Revolution, shares
a conversation with J.L. Bell on the bloody battle in Charlestown on June 17, 1775.
This encounter exposed leadership problems for both British and American forces
and stirred up bitter arguments that echoed for decades. Even as the fighting
took place, the Continental Congress in Philadelphia was choosing a new commander.
What qualities did George Washington bring to the American army licking its wounds
outside Boston?
Co-sponsored by the National Park Service, Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters
National Historic Site and Boston National Historical Park; the Massachusetts Society
of the Cincinnati;   the Friends of the Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters;
and the Cambridge Historical Society.

Why I Read: The Serious Pleasure of Books

Author and essayist Wendy Lesser explores the ways that literature and, especially,
poetry touch readers and change their lives, as Cambridge Forum continues its series
"My Life Touched by Art." In a culture that is increasingly visual and virtual
in orientation, what role does old-fashioned reading play? What power does the
written word have in our lives?
