A strike by 20,000 textile workers
in the city of Mahalla, Egypt, began February 10 as workers fight for a raise
in the minimum wage, payment of back wages, and other demands.  Strikes have spread involving public
transport workers, doctors, pharmacists, journalists, metal laborers and
Workers have been a prominent force in social struggles, from
the strikes of textile workers in 2006, to the mobilizations in Tahrir Square
that led to the ouster of the Mubarak regime in January 2011, through the
toppling of the Muslim Brotherhood government of President Mohammed Morsi in
June last year. As a result, working people throughout Egypt have gained more
confidence to act politically, fight for unions and press their demands.
Tens of thousands attended the Cairo International Book Fair,
January 22-February 6, 2014, the largest cultural event in the region.
Pathfinder Press, a U.S.-based publishing house that produces books on
revolutionary working-class politics, participated in the fair for the first
