*Solidarity after Bhopal: Building a Transnational Environmental Justice
Movement *
Sat 03:10pm - 04:50pm
Session:3 | Room: 3. 79
CUNY Graduate Center | 365 Fifth Avenue | New York, NY 10016 | 212-817-2003

On December 3rd 1984 a methyl isocyante tank in Union Carbide's pesticide
factory in Bhopal exploded releasing 40 tons of highly toxic gas. 8000 died
in the next few days and the death toll stands at 25000 and counting. Over
a hundred thousand suffer from chronic illness and a sharp increase in
birth defects has been observed in the last decade. Dow Chemical, owner of
Union Carbide refuses to cooperate with legal proceedings. The toxic site
is yet to be cleaned. About 50,000 people live on contaminated land. The
struggle for justice in Bhopal continues into its 30th year. The panelists
will raise questions about effective global solidarity around environment
and social justice, international frameworks to hold challenge
transnational corporations, and how to support survivors demands.
