In 2008, as the US government tried to gift the energy and mining
industries thousands of acres of pristine Utah wilderness via a widely
disputed federal auction, college student Tim DeChristopher decided to
monkey-wrench the process.
Bidding $1.7 million, he won 22,000 acres with no intention to drill.
For this astonishing (and successful) act of civil disobedience he was
sent to federal prison.
*Bidder 70* tells the story of this peaceful warrior whose patriotism
and willingness to sacrifice have ignited the climate justice movement.
"/Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul."/ ~Edward Abbbey
/"At this point of unimaginable threats on the horizon, this is what
hope looks like. In these times of a morally bankrupt government that
has sold out its principles, this is what patriotism looks like. With
countless lives on the line, this is what love looks like, and it will
only grow... /"
"/...without the slightest tinge of manipulation, Bidder 70 convinces us
that these people really do care about the fate of humankind and that
we're entrapped in a legal system that is, environmentally speaking,
still set on driving us off a cliff. /" ~Kalvin Henely, Slant Magazine
"/A film everyone needs to see, even if you think you?re well-informed
about political issues, environmentalism, and global climate change./"
~Ashland Independent Film Festival
/"Tim?s trial was pushed back 6 times over two years and was fraught
with maddening plot twists. The judge refused to let Tim use the
Necessity Defense or let the jury know crucial facts, including that the
auction was illegal./"
~ Think Progress
/"the DeChristopher case really speaks to a newer phenomenon: the
attempt to elevate economic interests over freedom of speech, wherein
... lawyers and judges are interpreting (or reinterpreting) laws to
privilege corporations over individual/s" ~ Mark Jenkins
"/Sometimes you just have to jump off the cliff and build your wings on
the way down."/ ~Tim DeCristopher
Tidbits from the pen of Henry David Thoreau:
"/A common and natural result of an undue respect of law is, that you
may see a file of soldiers, colonel, captain, corporal, privates,
powder-monkeys, and all, marching in admirable order over hill and dale
to the wars, against their wills, ay, against their common sense and
?/Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his
conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience then? I
think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward./?
"/Law never made men a whit more just; and, by means of their respect
for it, even the well-disposed are daily made the agents of injustice./?
"/What does education often do? It makes a straight-cut ditch of a free,
"/[Slavery] exists wherever men are bought and sold, wherever a man
allows himself to be made a mere thing or a tool, and surrenders his
inalienable rights of reason and conscience. Indeed, this slavery is
more complete than that which enslaves the body alone.... I never yet
met with, or heard of, a judge who was not a slave of this kind, and so
the finest and most unfailing weapon of injustice. He fetches a slightly
higher price than the black men only because he is a more valuable slave./"
/"If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that
is where they should be. Now put the foundation under them./"

Why should YOU care? It's YOUR money that pays for US/Israeli wars - on
Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Palestine, Libya. Syria, Iran, So America, etc
etc - for billionaire bailouts, for ever more ubiquitous US prisons, for
the loss of liberty and civil rights...
Pick up invaluable guides and join a discussion about the US Jury system
we'll all take the "/*The Jury Quiz*/" after the film :-)
Learn what the Jury system was meant to be, find out about Jury
Nullification and the power jurors have that prosecutors and judges
don?t want us to know about.
We need to know and we need to spread the word! Flyers and brochures
will be available; eg:
The biggest and most powerful
law enforcement agency
in the United States
has the absolute
to ignore government laws,
keep people out of prison,
ignore judges & prosecutors,
make the outcome of any jury trial
what they want it to be,
and make our government honest.
*What is this agency?*
The fully informed jury
[But only if we/they know]
