This is a rare opportunity to see a groundbreaking work in documentary, which captures a particular moment in the history of the American Left.
 
Laura Poitras (director of CITIZENFOUR) calls it "one of the most courageous films I know".

UNDERGROUND at the DocYard Monday, March 9, 2015 at 7:00pm at the Brattle Theatre

CAMBRIDGE, MA — On March 9 at the Brattle Theatre, The DocYard will present Emile de Antonio, Haskell Wexler, and Mary Lampson's UNDERGROUND (US, 1976, 87 min). The film was highly controversial when it was first released and today Laura Poitras (CITIZENFOUR) calls it “One of the most courageous films I know”. Ben Fowlie, cofounder and programmer for The DocYard calls it “the CITIZENFOUR of its time - Now is the perfect moment to revisit this provocative and important film.”

Director Mary Lampson will attend in person for Q&A moderated by Robb Moss, Harvard Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies and director of SECRECY.

Synopsis: In 1975, filmmakers Emile de Antonio, Mary Lampson, and Haskell Wexler gained access to five key members of the Weathermen, a violent activist group that was once a part of the Students for a Democratic Society. The Weathermen went underground with plans to overthrow the U.S. Government and the film captures their motivations and their critique of the US, its actions and policies. Weathermen members Bill Ayers, Kathy Boudin, Bernardine Dohrn, Jeff Jones, and Cathy Wilkerson are featured. After its release, the FBI would attempt to confiscate the film footage in order to track down the group’s members.
