Community Church of Boston presents

*“The Red & Green of May Day” with Judith Woodruff*
*
*
*11AM Service**: *May day is recognized around the world as a holiday of
celebration and appreciation of working people. Originally it was a
springtime fertility festival whose origins go back far into the ancient
world. It is known for its May poles, dances, floral wreaths, fertility
rites, and general rejoicing along with days off from work. This program
will explore how May Day came to be the working class holiday by 1894; a
remembrance of the Haymarket martyrs’ struggle for the eight hour day;
and how it is now a day of world wide working class demonstrations with
efforts to make it a legal American holiday, as it is in most of the
countries of the world. *•/Judith Woodruff/*, BA in History and MA in
Education, has been an educator and community activist in both New York
and Massachusetts. Judith has created as well as lead many programs that
bring artists from all disciplines together with community locally and
internationally. Currently, Judith works with Families Creating Together
and serves on the CCB Board.

*Music by Mat Callahan and Yvonne Moore */*(from Switzerland)*/

*  Even in Pandemic Pandemonium, We Rise!*

Dear CCB Friends,

This is a moment of deep uncertainty, a moment of great change. An
institution whose main goal is to bring people together is obligated to
tell people to STAY AWAY. What could be weirder? And how could it be
that it came when an absolute buffoon of a president is supposed to be
leading us somewhere? Off a cliff, is what it seems like at this juncture.

We are walking in the wilderness. But the spirit moves us to walk with
purpose. Grace Lee Boggs, the luminary Detroit activist used to say,
“Every crisis an opportunity”. Here’s our opportunity: to learn the
importance of our media to get our message out to a wider audience. We
have broadcast on several platforms for five weeks in a row. It gave
several folks who couldn’t listen in person, a chance to tune in by
phone or by video conference, or Youtube or Facebook. We were saying:
“Why haven’t we been doing this all along? Well, there is an easy
answer: because it’s not easy, especially for us dinosaurs from another
millennium, to figure out technical stuff. The unknown is a scary place.
But then, when you’re obligated to do it, you realize that it’s not a
big deal, just takes some learning of new disciplines and habits of mind
and practice.

This is all to say JOIN US! We are broadcasting on Zoom. Look for each
Sunday’s call-in info in the email. Or else tune in live on our Youtube
channel. It’s called “Community Church of Boston-Official”. Last week 65
people heard Rev. Barry Lynn speak, with the incomparable Catie Curtis
providing the music. Watch our Facebook page and website for upcoming
events.

This too shall pass, is what Lee Hays, of The Weavers, used to say about
his kidney stones. Let us say it over and over about this dread moment.
Let’s not forget that we are one hundred years old. That our festivities
are NOT CANCELED, JUST POSTPONED! When this great storm is over, we will
certainly celebrate. And we will be stronger.

Meanwhile, I share with you that CCB is in a tough spot: most of our
operating budget is from our first-floor restaurant tenant. In Fall
2019, Clover Food Labs, a wonderful non-meat restaurant, opened in our
space. Now Clover is closed, and will not be paying us rent until the
coast is clear, and restaurants can open again. Their remarkable young
team has been furloughed. If this thing lasts into the summer, CCB will
be in a desperate situation.

I know this is a hard moment for lots of folks. But if you can help us
keep the lights on, the programs coming at you, the staff nourished,
please contribute…You can send us a check, to 565 BOYLSTON ST., BOSTON,
MA 02116,  or you can go to our website and contribute by clicking on
the “Donate” button through Paypal
<https://communitychurchofboston.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=97f7dfeb0bfd338d2250fe8e5&id=201d3e21b4&e=3e8e4cf5c6>.
We depend on your generosity, now more than ever. There will be a major
One Hundredth Anniversary Celebration in the Fall. We will feature very
special programming, both speakers and musicians, in special venues. Be
generous to CCB!

Note: Luis Guzmán, our cook and janitor had the virus, and is on the
mend: send get well cards to the
church address. William King, our sprinkler system plumber, who was
about to install sprinklers on the fourth and fifth floors, came down
with it, along with his family. They are at the end of their isolation
period. We have been touched by this horrible thing, as I’m sure many of
you have. Let’s hold together and move forward. We’re in it for the long
haul!
