SOLIDARITY ACROSS DISTANCES
From Insurrections to Transgressions: Making Sense
of Word and Sound Across the Indian Ocean
Three renowned musicians and intellectuals, Sumangala Damodaran (India),
Ari Sitas and Sazi Dlamini (South Africa) will discuss, using words and
music,
the motivations and processes that have been involved in the creation of the
Insurrections Ensemble, which is a poetry-music collaboration between Indian
and South African poets and musicians since 2011. The collaboration, which
has attempted to respond to events that unfolded in the two countries and in
the rest of the world in the new millennium, has drawn upon the different
poetic, instrumental and vocal traditions of the members of the ensemble and
has resulted in five productions over the years. The session will also
reflect on
the possibilities and conundrums of the present moment for artistic
production. Click on the link for a description of the Insurrections
Ensemble
