Our votes are demands, not support.

Massachusetts Poor People’s Campaign marches in Boston

Noon, Saturday, October 15

Get-Out-The-Vote national action

Some 100 people will march in Boston on October 15th. The Massachusetts Poor People’s Campaign (MA PPC) is a part of the national GOTV action on main streets of capital cities across the country to encourage poor and low-income people and low-propensity voters to not only register but also cast their ballots.

The Massachusetts Poor People’s Campaign will host a short speakout beginning at 12:00 PM ET at Copley Square (near) Trinity Church where we will take a moment to ground ourselves in the PPC’s National Call for Moral Revival and hear from impacted people who will voice their plight, fight, and insight around systemic issues and why Our Vote is Our Demand! Following the speakout the group will march down Huntington Avenue ending at (near) Symphony Hall on Massachusetts Avenue. These coordinated, same-day actions – which will start at noon in each time zone in – are part of the work by the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival to reach out to 5 million people with the theme of “If We Ever Needed to Vote for Democracy and Justice, We Sure Do Need to Vote Now!”

Speakers will emphasize that their votes are not support but instead, they are demands that the issues of poor and low-income people and low-wage workers are at the center of our national narrative.

Fifty-eight million low-income people voted in the 2020 presidential election, accounting for 33% of the electorate and 45% in battleground states, according to the PPC:NCMR study, “Waking the Sleeping Giant: Low-Income Voters and the 2020 Elections”<https://url1005.email.actionnetwork.org/ss/c/atcYNHk4Eh2YdGnwBh-YDGGbCNKutjwJ1yXAR9WxkAwrgZ6qJMSXCcfVhVBR1qgPXYXBrafzvWmEtxBOSVdIYdKFyMHTDF8e2Nnjp54votoQ8bYYnNcRB4p8Qk2Kaf2JVcpK_hHtC2TdTSpNyp5BZobH2xp937QrFDz0JwteQJ5YPuTKDrXwqlJudfpQZ9vYjvY7lrW6Xizm1ZKC7X8LjmIjlx3trMWxTO_Q9JPZrYFt7ZMl3ajyEi71KZU-pzwdCbwRV7C4D_nkESSFRzt_wm_RUQDlV5xiJq933ZKaiPulqyv4ZH-KqsfCPHq-2IwT2OyZP8yVLiyMNT9rgAKFuTuzULI9C0Yv0AhDYEebLEEEYXFXTCUTvjhbTIAuJlC_4VATZgtdnIxMtOaZ1PiQxqzinrK9TOz0Yv0C5N4_yl_x_m1jgBAtrnJ4Cs0PAgYxBCpYrVzecZaq2S44P07rCBCzBQdsCEWfU92dxIuHaYYDm8HnYEOlriM4nyKKflxDaYQokdJtt7YTXMjaeh0nbFaVntjGo3GqPTxh3eWsd5qNfz7HiupHzt2ugQC1puNZ/3q7/WIL9nI8QS92kmvSwCvOarQ/h3/51HU-kASYX0lrHCSaEgQjARsTCquzmPq1E6zZxwlN1s> that the campaign released last year.

But over 80 million were eligible to cast a ballot, meaning over 20 million low-income people left their votes on the table. And when you consider that a mere 400 votes separated the winner and loser in one North Carolina race, that means these non-active voters do have the power to make politicians listen to them.
