*“Manufacturing Heroes, Marketing Dreams: Who Was the Real Martin Luther
King Jr. at the End of His Life?” with Allen Pérez Somarribas *
(a longtime CCB member)
Who was the real Martin Luther King Jr. during his last 12 months of life?
*• Allen Pérez Somarribas//*was born in Costa Rica in 1960. He is a
human rights attorney, former Human Right's Associate for Latin America
& the Caribbean for UUSC, who in 1998 led the first American delegation
to Havana to celebrate the International Socio-Theological Seminar on
the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event was also co-hosted by
the King family, represented by the Rev. Joel King (first cousin of Dr.
King), Dr. David C. Jehnsen (founder of the Institute for Human Rights
and Responsibilities (IHRR) and now Chair of the Center for Nonviolence
& Conflict Transformation), and with the acquiescence of the Cuban and
American governments.
*Music by Reggie Harris*
*Sunday, April 9th at 11 AM:*
*“How to Save a Planet (Before It's Too Late)”
with Julia Hansen*
We’re living in a time of global crisis. We bear witness to the effects
of our government’s inability to respond to the existential threats of
climate and ecological emergency. Facing these threats alone can be
overwhelming. Come to hear more about what humanity is facing in the
next decade, what has to happen to prevent catastrophe, and to connect
with others who are wrestling with these truths. You are not alone.
*• Julia Hansen***is a climate activist with Extinction Rebellion. After
years of doom-scrolling through increasingly bad news on climate, she
has found purpose, optimism and joy in taking non-violent direct action
in fellowship with others who cannot sit on the sidelines while the
environment we rely upon is destroyed. Julia works for a carbon
consultancy firm in Boston.
*Music by Dean Stevens and Rob Flax*
*Sunday, April 16th at 11 AM:*
*“The Struggle for Ecological Socialism”
with Victor Wallis*
In my book "Red-Green Revolution: The Politics and Technology of
Ecosocialism," I explore in detail the choices that must be made if our
species is to survive. I present the book's new edition, in which I
reflect on the convergence of crises in the last four years.
*• Victor Wallis**//*teaches political science at the Berklee College of
Music. He is the author of "Red-Green Revolution" (2018/2022),
"Democracy Denied: Five Lectures on U.S. Politics" (2019), and
"Socialist Practice: Histories and Theories" (2020).
