Cultural Manifestations of 'The Case That Will Not Die.'"
August 23, 2023
Reception 5:30 PM, Program & Film 7 PM

F riends,

I hope you will join us on Wednesday August 23, to observe the 96th anniversary of the execution of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. We do this every year in honor of the late Robert D’Attilio, who lived and breathed the memory of this good shoemaker and this good fish peddler, left us a rich repository of case materials, and reminded us of CCB’s deep historic involvement with the Sacco and Vanzetti struggle, dating back to our inception in 1920.

This year we welcome a new friend and artist of note, Shoshanah Dubiner. She has enjoyed a long and fruitful career as an artist fascinated with science and the rapturous beauty of the natural microscopic world translated onto a surreal canvas. Check out just a little sample of Shoshanah’s work right [ https://communitychurchofboston.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=97f7dfeb0bfd338d2250fe8e5&id=8b7709912e&e=3e8e4cf5c6 |  here ] . What brings her to us now, is a look back at artwork she did on the film set of the [ https://communitychurchofboston.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=97f7dfeb0bfd338d2250fe8e5&id=6873056616&e=3e8e4cf5c6 |  Giuliano Montaldo ] film, "Sacco and Vanzetti". Her main job was assistant costume designer, but she also produced drawings of various on-location scenes. These remarkable pieces will be on display at the Lothrop Auditorium. Join us for a 5:30 reception, followed by a 7 PM screening of the film. Join us!!

Michele Fazio is Professor of English and Co-coordinator of the Gender Studies Minor at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where she teaches courses on contemporary U.S. ethnic literature, service-learning, and working-class studies. Her film, Voices of the Lumbee, received the Studs Terkel Award for Media and Journalism and the North Carolina Folklore Society Brown-Hudson Award. She has served as president of the Working-Class Studies Association and co-edited the Routledge International Handbook of Working-Class Studies (2021). Her research on family history, community, and memory has been exhibited at the Harvard Law School Library and the American Labor Museum. Through the support of a BMI Woody Guthrie Research Fellowship and a Massachusetts Historical Society Fellowship, she is currently working on a book project exploring the cultural legacy of Sacco and Vanzetti. She is also a founding member of the Teaching Woody Guthrie Collective.

Come early for a potluck dinner, and for a walk through our Sacco and Vanzetti Room, guided by curator Jerry Kaplan, who has devoted a couple of years of his full attention to organizing and preserving Bob D’Attilio’s vast collection of Sacco and Vanzetti related materials.

This is a hybrid event with an in person reception beginning at 5:30 PM Lothrop Auditorium. Program begins at 7 PM
