International Woman’s Day Pena

Today, as in the last century, great unrest and critical debate are
occurring among women regarding women’s oppression and inequality. Folks
are becoming more vocal and active in the struggle for change. For many
decades women have played an important role in the battles for justice. On
March 8, 1908, 15,000 women marched in New York protesting child labor and
demanding shorter hours, better pay, and women's suffrage. After the tragic
New York 'Triangle Fire' in 1911, which took the lives of 140 mostly
Italian and Jewish working women, significant attention was focused on
sweatshop conditions and the need for labor legislation.

The 'Bread and Roses' campaign soon followed demanding: "Bread for all and
roses too". Since then, the world has witnessed a significant shift in
thinking about women's equality and emancipation. With more women in the
boardroom, some legislation, increased visibility of women as role models,
some think that true equality has been achieved. Those who think so are
being reminded of the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy and
that true equality is still a long way off. The unfortunate fact is that
women are still no paid equally to their male counterparts and women are
still far behind in matters of wealth and political power. Globally,
women's education and health generally fall below that of men and gender
violence against women is common around the world.
