Prof. Molina will be delivering a talk entitled "Guatemala, 10 Years After
the Peace Accords: a Critical Retrospective." He will speak mainly about the
importance of the Peace Accords signed in 1996, and the fact that they were good
on paper but have not been properly implemented. He will also update us on the
Human Rights conditions in Guatemala.
Raul Molina Meija was the Acting President of La Universidad Nacional
de San Carlos in Guatemala in the early 80's but was forced to flee to the States.
Since then he has worked as a champion of human rights in Guatemala;
he has served on the Board of Directors of the Guatemala Human Rights Commission,
as President of the Guatemalan National Chapter of the International League for the
Rights and Liberation of Peoples, as the Founding member of Representación Unitaria de
la Oposición Guatemalteca (RUOG), as the Coordinator of the National
University of Guatemala's Truth Commission, among other posts. Currently he
is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Social Sciences at NYU and an Adjunct
Associate Professor of History at Long Island University.
