What really led the United States to invade Iraq? And why have events failed to unfold as promised? In his new book, The Occupation of Iraq: Winning the War, Losing the Peace, senior Iraqi government advisor Ali A. Allawi presents an insider’s view of the ongoing crisis in Iraq and explores the prospects for the future of his country. How can devastated Iraq end sectarian violence and achieve peace? Does the Iraq experience suggest the United States should rethink its role as global policeman?

Allawi discusses these questions with Roger Owen, Middle East historian at Harvard University, at Cambridge Forum on April 4, 2007. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. at First Parish, 3 Church Street, Harvard Square, in Cambridge. A book-signing courtesy of Harvard Book Store follows the program.

With more than 30 years experience in Iraqi politics, Ali Allawi has served post-invasion Iraq in various capacities, including Minister of Trade, Minister of Defense, member of the Transitional National Assembly and Minister of Finance in the Transitional National Government of Dr. Ibrahim al-Jaafari. He currently serves as a senior advisor to the Prime Minister of Iraq, Nouri al-Maliki, and has built relationships with key players and groups on all sides of the insurgency.
