RESISTANCE
"Praying for Peace, but Paying for War?"

at Community

href="http://www.commchurch.org">www.commchurch.org

*************

Honoring
today our beloved Cynthia Foster, a lifelong war tax resister, our
guests
will attempt to answer: "What is war tax resistance?". Very simply,
it is
refusal of some or all federal taxes on income or telephone service.
Income
taxes and excise taxes are deposited by the government into a general
fund,
and at least half of this provides the military budget, including
personnel,
all types of war materiel and weapons of mass destruction.

War tax
resistance is an act of civil disobedience with a long history in
the U.S.
For most who resist, the dire consequences of voluntarily paying
for war are
far worse than what the IRS/government can do to an individual.
The most
well-known resister was Henry David Thoreau, who stated during
the
Mexican-American War of 1846-8, "If a thousand [people] were not to
pay
their tax bills....that would not be a violent and bloody measure, as
it
would be to pay them and enable the state to commit violence and
shed
innocent blood." He was put in jail!

Following this Sunday's
forum, at 2pm, there will be a memorial service for
Cynthia Foster, a
life-long social justice activist and longtime member of
the Community Church
of Boston.

*************

NEXT WEEK'S COMMUNITY CHURCH FORUM
