Call 617.267.2949 to RSVP. <BR><BR>Come celebrate important tenant victories of the past year and help make sure that tenants’ voices are heard in the struggle to win full funding and new policies that will <STRONG>Save Our Homes</STRONG>.<BR><BR>Since 1983, MAHT has been organizing tenants, one building at a time, to save more than 10,400 at-risk apartments in more than seventy-three developments. These struggles have made MAHT a national leader in the affordable housing preservation movement. Yet, tenants could not have achieved their victories without a lot of help from our friends. And so this year, we inaugurate a tradition of recognizing key supporters who have made outstanding contributions to the tenant movement. At the party, “First, we honor the lawyers” from three law firms who have made hugely important pro bono contributions to help tenants save their homes: <BR><BR><U>Jonathan Klein (Klein Hornig</U>), for his outstanding work helping ROXSE Tenants Council fight corrupt management and win resident controlled ownership.<BR><U>Dick Allen (Casner & Edwards</U>), for his work to preserve RAP UP II B as Section 8 housing and his donation of legal fees to MAHT.<BR><U>Steven Hoort, Greg Kaden, and Bill McCarthy (Ropes & Gray</U>), for helping the Schoolhouse 77 Tenants Association navigate bankruptcy court and preserve their homes.<BR><BR>Please join us as we pay tribute to our honorees and prepare for the struggles ahead. There is an urgent crisis facing us all now: for the first time ever, 400,000 elderly, families and people with disabilities in Section 8 housing are at real risk of losing their homes if HUD runs out of funds and landlords raise rents to market levels. Congress will soon pass a HUD funding bill for 2008 that is $1.8 billion short of what is needed to fully fund all Section 8 contracts, due to misleading information from HUD. Worse, President Bush has vowed to veto even this inadequate amount. Unless Congress overrides Bush’s veto AND adds more money, tenants face mass displacement.
