founder of grassroots media videoblog Alive in Baghdad, is one of six
US citizens detained in China for covering actions of Students for Free
Tibet during the Olympics. The other five pro-Tibet activists are
Jeffrey Rae, Jeff Goldin, Michael Liss, Tom Grant, and James Powderly.
On Thursday, the Chinese government handed them and four other European

Protesters Say No to Psychologists' Involvement in Torture</span><br>On Saturday, August 16, about two hundred protesters gathered in Boston
to protest psychologists’ involvement in abusive interrogations and
illegal detention. People gathered at the American Psychological
Association Annual Convention to support a call to the APA to forbid
their members from cooperating in any way in torture and reject our
government's use of "enhanced interrogation techniques." Co-sponsors of
this action included Psychoanalysts for Social Responsibility, the
Coalition for an Ethical Psychology, and Psychologists for an Ethical
APA. In the next month, APA members will be voting on a referendum that
would make any participation in detainee interrogations a violation of

No Ice Raids Rally in Boston</span><br>Wednesday morning, August 13, 2008, about 150 people gathered in
Government Center, Boston, to protest ICE raids. This event was

Verizon Settlement Provides New Union Jobs, Protects Health Care</span><br>A new tentative three-year contract settlement with Verizon achieves
union employees' major goals of promoting union jobs and expanding
bargaining rights, providing good health care for both active and
retired workers, and increasing wages and pensions for 65,000 workers
from Virginia to Maine, the Communications Workers of America and

Gaza Under Siege</span><br>After Hamas' January 25, 2006 electoral victory, Israel targeted Gaza
oppressively. All outside aid was cut off. Sanctions and an economic
embargo were imposed, and the democratically elected government was
falsely called a terrorist organization and isolated. Stepped up
repression followed along with repeated IDF incursions, attacks,
killings, targeted assassinations, arrests, destruction of property and
more in a pattern all too familiar to Palestinians for over six
decades. Gazans are imprisoned in their own land and have been
traumatized for months. In June 2007, things got worse after Israel
placed the Territory under siege - described by some as medieval

Counter Military Recruitment Action in Boston</span><br>About 200 anti-war activists picketed in front of the Boston armed
forces recruitment center on Tremont Street. Protesters had a picket
line directly in front of the center on the sidewalk. Across the street
info tables were set up from Troops Out Now, Veterans For Peace,
IrawqVeterans Against the War, and other peace groups. There was a
small pro-war counter demonstration there with no incidents. The picketers shouted spirited chants against the wars and the
recruiting center. This action was part of a series of local actions

Political Violence Increases in El Salvador</span><br>As student groups prepare to commemorate the anniversary of an infamous
massacre of students by government forces on July 30, 1975, political
violence continues in El Salvador 33 years later. In the last two
years, social organizations, human rights monitors, community groups
and the Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN)
political party have publically denounced the alarming increase in
