Previously ignored desert land on the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Mexico</st1:place></st1:country-region> side, where 53 families settled decades ago, suddenly became strategically valuable land. One of <st1:place w:st="on">Juarez</st1:place> ¢s richest families is trying to claim ownership of the land, and has built a fence around the community with only one entrance controlled by guards. Guards killed two community members, one a child who died when they burned down a resident's house. The struggle

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 14.4pt"><FONT size=3><SPAN style="COLOR: #333333; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">Immigration is a fact of life for many Mexican families, particularly rural families. <st1:City w:st="on">Ciudad Juarez</st1:City> is both a destination, as workers look for jobs in the maquiladora sector, and a transit point, as workers come to the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">US</st1:country-region></st1:place> as undocumented workers. Today more than 60% of <st1:place w:st="on">Juarez</st1:place> residents are immigrants, living in hastily constructed shanty towns without water, electricity or sanitation. In many ways, <st1:place w:st="on">Juarez</st1:place> is the prototype urban area in the neoliberal era, boasting industrial parks with modern highways and city services, surrounded by bleak, dusty neighborhoods that house more than 400,000 workers typically earning around five
to seven dollars a day.</SPAN></FONT></DIV>
